This is a character-driven novel that depicts the unraveling of the main character's worldview. The tragedy of unfolding events puts her past, present, and future into question all at once, making her question beliefs that seemed previously unquestionable.

A car accident leaves River Novak’s mother in a coma, causing her to abandon her big-city life and move back to small-town Oklahoma. River takes on the responsibility of running her mother’s cattle supply store in hopeful expectation that Loretta will recover from the mutilating impact of this head-on collision. To keep the store afloat River must work alongside the store’s manager, Luke, whom she decides is an ignorant simpleton. This fact makes him the wrong person to fall into a relationship with. But the intimacy of their connection opens her mind to his humanity, making her question what she knows about people like him.

The longer Loretta’s comatose body lies motionless, displaying no sign of awareness, the more pressing one particular question becomes for River. What is consciousness, exactly? The weight of this question, along with new traumatic events, force her to rely on something greater than her strong rational mind to survive them. Just when she thinks she can’t survive another crashing wave, she discovers an important secret that her mom had kept from her all of her life. The impact of this discovery causes River’s own consciousness to stumble into otherwise unwilling territory--an altered state of mind. Her mom’s secret points River down a path leading to a whole new world of possibilities. In some ways, River’s story begins where this book ends.

Certain authoritarians who joined the #metoo movement have been sucking the fun out of culture, one icon at a time. This month, the religious-left aimed their judgmental gaze at Christmas.

Apparently, the song Baby It's Cold Outside should be removed and...

No one knows what it's like to be you. Except for you, of course. If you have a partner or spouse, especially one who's empathetic, they come the closest to understanding what it's like walking in your shoes. But spouses love to assume they know what your thinking. The...

You may never have thought about the fact that country music is rural music. Distinct genres emerge from different regions across the U.S. showcasing cultural aspects of the U.S. (Bluegrass from Appalachia and The Blues from the deep south and Honka-tonk from the south...

Your little light, oh, so bright

Filled the sky in my head with angel light

But, you killed the light, took it right out my head

When you let the devil dance in our bed

The setting for my book is the south and one of the threads I pull through the book is race. This song could be an anthem for the thread I've woven through it.

As social beings we are pretty easily persuaded, some of us more easily than others (eh-hem).

You probably share an opinion with the majority of people around you. You also hold your views for moral reasons. You're a good person, you just want what's best for everyone....
